Objectives:

  • Learning about mapping and mapmaking. Monitoring surrounding with a special interest. Making conclusions, recapping. Sharing spots of interest.
  • A starting point of further discussion for change or improvement.

Preparation: Learning the use of Greemap.org tool

Tools needed: Greenmap.org mapping tool

Description

The participants learn about Greenmap.org environmental and community mapmaking tool and its icons.

A common map is established with the group on a shared theme. Spots of interest/vulnerable spots/environmental hazards/community spots etc are added on to the map using the icons of Greenmap.org.

The best way is to have walks or field trips in the chosen area and take pictures of the spots, add descriptions on the map features.

Variations

The mapping tool can be used as a survey tool for local community.

The results can be shared with relevant stakeholders and authorities: For example a map of traffic hazards or environmentally vulnerable spots is created. A discussion about further steps on improving or changing the situation is needed.
