Objectives:

  • Gathering information from a group about topics near their life. Strengthening the dialogue between citizen. Bringing down barriers between people sharing the same neighborhood/community. Paying attention to the surrounding. Gaining a deeper understanding of community infrastructure and design.

Preparation: Prepare and look from a map a suitable route in the nearby areas. Prepare the theme or topic unless it will be decided by the group.

Tools needed: Note taking tools: smartphone or paper and pens. Maybe a map of the area.

Description

The activity works best when participants share the same neighborhood/community and are demographically as varied as possible. Also it is best utilized as a part of a longer process of making a change in ones surroundings.

Introduce the theme to the group or have a discussion of which topic the walk is going to be about. Have the walk and guide the discussion to the topic, if needed but let the discussion and observations flow.

Reflection: gather the notes and observations about the chosen topic. Plan the next steps (inviting policymakers to the same walk, sending the results to local council etc)

Variations

The activity can also be done in school, inside and outside the school yard and close proximity + the streets and roads the students use to arrive to school.
